Modern Walking Football was developed in 2011 and launched in Wiltshire in 2014. The game has two major differences to the traditional version: there is no running or jogging, and physical contact is kept to a minimum to reduce the risk of injury. Aimed predominantly at the over 50s for both men and women, many recreational sessions emerged throughout the county and are active and running.

Eventually some of the players looked for a more competitive game and soon tournaments and leagues were developing across the country.
In early 2020 a group of Wiltshire clubs, together with support from the Wiltshire FA, formed the Wiltshire County Walking Football League.
